A stroll through the wilderness...

Hello it's been a while!

I just want to bring you guys up to date on some things going on over here. Essentially at the end of last year I was pretty sure I didn't want to do this anymore. It was one of the strangest and most thorough existential crises I'd ever been confronted with. After thinking about it for a couple months I figured out that I didn't necessarily want to walk away, I just didn't want to do it in the fashion that I've been doing it for years now. That sentence is a bit redundant and vague but that's as it should be, the interior of nearly any travels can sometimes be confusing and heartbreaking, even numbing. It's important to step aside and take a breather from time to time. And that's where I've been.

So I am on a break right now. I really don't know how long this hiatus, or &quot;vacation,&quot; will last. I'm still being creative, writing and recording, even wrestling with some prose... Making plans. But I just don't know when any of it will see the light of day and I'm not gonna rush even though there are things I'm excited to share with you guys. The challenge for me now is to define a balance between the engines that motivate me so that one doesn't destroy the others. I really do hate talking in metaphor, but honestly, some of this would bore you to tears. It was boring me, so the least I can do is offer it to you in a colorful language. The cards have all been tossed into the air, we'll see what happens next. Shouldn't be too long...

Stay tuned!

Matthew Ryan&nbsp;

In the meantime, enjoy some Joe Henry just below. Monkey has pretty much been my companion as of late. Chose to remove the play feature on here because I couldn't disable the downloading of Monkey, so just click the youtube link to give it a listen then go buy it, it's on his Fuse album.

<a target="_new" href="http://youtu.be/RZHxU9IuAic">http://youtu.be/RZHxU9IuAic

And finally, but surely not last, I want to offer my thoughts to those in West, Texas and Boston. What a sad and rough week it was.&nbsp;

Regarding All Your Birthday Wishes, Something In Return...

Today is my birthday. I can't believe how quickly they seem to be coming these days. I'm busy preparing for the upcoming shows and I'm very proud of the setlist that's coming together. A lot of songs are coming back from the past, Dusk has really opened a door to a certain beauty that I did worry was gone. I'm happy to report that it's alive, bright and well and I can't wait to play these shows for you. Check the <a target="_new" href="./tour.cfm">TOUR PAGE to see if I'm coming near ya!

So as I was rehearsing my phone was blowing up with texts, phonecalls and messages. Social media makes it possible for us to engage in so many beautiful and contructive ways. Through out the day I recieved hundreds of messages and wishes from people, family and friends from around the world. It's been really beautiful, a genuinely warming experience.

So in return I wrote this for you. I hope you enjoy it. And thank you again!

Art, Artists & Modern Culture - Welcome To The Vacuum, Where's The Bottom?

I recently wrote this in response to a heartbroken post by my friend Kasey Anderson regarding his career and the reality of the landscape before him. The post I'm talking about was brought to my attention by a mutual friend that <a target="_new" href="http://thehonkies.tumblr.com/post/34366410528/you-cant-fire-me-i-quit">found it on his website. My response was visceral and immediate because I identified with Kasey's struggle and need to take a breather before recommitting to his fight for his work and life. Now, I know that not everyone can win, so please don't misunderstand what the point is here. But we have a situation where the more nuanced, subtle, honest, rich, complex and denser arts are dying in our culture. It seems to me that there's no easy answer to why, how and what we can do about it. Nonetheless it is a conversation worth having, and there are solutions worth being passionate about. I've been watching the pummeling of very talented people for years now, from photographers to filmmakers and journalists and painters to poets and novelists and the support systems and talents and creatives that advocate and build awareness for all of these vital expressions. And yes, singers and songwriters and bands and musicians and composers. The death of art means the death of culture. And the truth is I haven't quite deduced what the death of culture leads to but my gut and my heart and my desire for those great engagements tell me that the death of culture leads nowhere good.

&quot;If you read one thing I post today, read this. My friend&nbsp;<a data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=100002684700119" style="cursor: pointer; color: rgb(59, 89, 152); text-decoration: none; " href="https://www.facebook.com/andersonkasey">Kasey Anderson&nbsp;is hanging up the gloves for a minute or two. It's heartbreaking. I can't even tell you how many times I've nearly done the same thing. Hell, even last week it crossed my mind even as things have been going so beautifully for Dusk. It just feels unsustainable. You see, there are artists out there wh
ere things like honest art, integrity, individual craft and dignity still matter. Kasey is one of them, I am too. And there's a thousand more of us. But we're getting our asses kicked by the way the engagement with music has gone. Couple that with an army of &quot;another kind of artist&quot; that will slit your throat and write an Old Navy jingle in a heartbeat to fill that god-shaped hole and 5 minutes of fame... And well, things are hard for the type that hold dear the aforementioned things... Now don't get me wrong, to each their own, and I mean that. It's not really for me to judge what motivates another. But there's no balance anymore and the audience and support for the real arts is shrinking. And one day we're gonna ask ourselves what the fuck happened? And we're gonna realize they were all starving to death and decided to get a &quot;real&quot; job. Well, art is a real job, it's important work... And a culture that ignores its artists and celebrates vapid nursery rhymes, well, is it a culture at all? I'll wager whether you buy a&nbsp;<a data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=1076961532" style="cursor: pointer; color: rgb(59, 89, 152); text-decoration: none; " href="https://www.facebook.com/kaseyanderson">Kasey Anderson&nbsp;record or not he'll keep writing songs in the middle of nowhere that could save your life late that night when you realize those beer commercial slogans are lying to you. I just hate seeing a friend lie down by the side of road. My gut tells me he'll get back up. But after a year of hunkering down like he did and touring backwards and forwards across this country with Counting Crows and advocating for other artists like he has, it's just sad to see him so beat down. And possibly, and probably the most painful thing is that I identify with what he's going through. He doesn't wanna be famous, I guarantee you that. He wants to earn an honest living and offer you something that really means something. And I'm telling you with all I have in my guts that he's good enough to do that if people would just slow down enough to appreciate the real arts as often as they do those shiny compressed missiles that dominate our &quot;culture&quot; these days. I've said my peace. Take a break Kasey, but don't let a broken heart kill what really matters regardless of the size of the fight.&quot;

Pre-Orders for In The Dusk of Everything starts this Wednesday, Oct. 10th @ 1pm EST...

Hey Guys,&nbsp;

So much going on in the build-up to release of In The Dusk Of Everything on October 30th. Lots of great advocacy from you guys by letting your friends, family and readers know about the new album. Thank You guys for that. Seriously, I've said it so many times that I'm starting to feel like a broken record... But your spreading the word gives my work a shot. It really does.&nbsp;

So, I've been getting a lot of questions about Pre-Orders. Finally I can announce that&nbsp;Pre-Orders will start on this Wednesday, October 10th at about 1pm EST. We will be taking both CD and Digital Pre-Orders. Once we re-open the store on this website on Wednesday the means to Pre-Order will be made very clear and easy.

CD Pre-Orders will be mailed out on Friday, Oct. 26th. The Digital Pre-Order is being made available by my Bandcamp and upon Pre-Ordering digitally you'll be able to download 2 new tracks from In The Dusk Of Everything. The download link will then be emailed to you by Bandcamp on the release date, October 30th.&nbsp;

Now listen, I wish there was an efficient way to get those tracks to those of you who Pre-Order the CD, but this is a very small operation and we simply can't do that with the flood of orders that come in. Please take that into account and understand that we're doing the best we can and be patient. I promise we'll be doing all we can to get the album to you as efficiently as possible. I can't wait for you guys to experience Dusk from top to bottom.&nbsp;

Now just a couple other updates that you may have missed:

- In The Dusk OF Everything is a 12 song record. The CD and the Digital Version are exactly the same.
- We're busy confirming both headlining and dates opening for The Gaslight Anthem. Dates will be announced shortly. Check out the <a target="_new" href="./tourdates.cfm">tour dates page!
- And It's Such A Drag (Track 4 on Dusk) is available as a FREE download at Noise Trade. Just go here:&nbsp;<a target="_new" href="http://noisetrade.com/matthewryan101">http://noisetrade.com/matthewryan101

Alright, that's all for now. Seiously, I'm about to update the tour dates in a moment. Stay tuned.

Matthew Ryan

            Hello Everyone,

            Just wanted to reach out and share a few bits of news:

            1.) On Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at aproximately 1pm EST I'll be releasing a&nbsp;Free Download Single via Noise Trade. The great website Popdose will be helping me to launch And It's Such A Drag single. The free single will be available via Noise Trade and it contains the following three songs:&nbsp;

            And It's Such A Drag&nbsp;(The first single from In The Dusk Of Everything)

            Closing In&nbsp;(The final track on Matthew Ryan Vs The Silver State)

            And Never Look Back&nbsp;(An exclusive unreleased acoustic demo version of the song off of From A Late Night High Rise).

            This Free Download will only be available for a short time, so if you're interested in it, I suggest you jump on it!&nbsp;

            The link will go live at approximately 1pm EST on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd!&nbsp;I will also be spreading the link via my social sites. I'd appreciate if that once you download it, that you share the link with your family and friends.

            So here it is:&nbsp;<a target="_new" style="color: rgb(17, 85, 204); " href="http://noisetrade.com/matthewryan101">http://noisetrade.com/matthewryan101

            Share that link all you want once it goes live!

            2.)&nbsp;Tour dates with The Gaslight Anthem...&nbsp;I'm happy to announce that&nbsp;I will be opening for The Gaslight Anthem on a string of dates through the Northeast in November &amp; December. This is a real thrill for me since The Gaslight Anthem has been one of my favorite bands in recent years. It turns out the feelings are mutual. Brian Fallon through the strangest of circumstances reached out to me and offered the dates. The short story is that he had posted some of my lyrics that he liked on his Twitter feed. A mutual listener brought it to my attention via a mention to both of us. I replied to both Brian and the mutual listener to say how cool I thought it was because I was a fan of his band. And the rest as they say is history. The mutual listeners' name was Rachael, so...&nbsp;Join me in&nbsp;Thanking Rachael!&nbsp;

            All the dates will be announced shortly.&nbsp;A string of solo headlining dates through the Midwest and The South will be announced at the same time.

            3.) Finally guys,&nbsp;I want to thank you for continuing to welcome my music into your lives.&nbsp;I say it a lot, but it's because I mean it, I simply couldn't keep doing this for a living without your advocacy and engagement. I made this album with my own money, I just believe that true independence is taking your own risks. Things are getting weirder everyday for artists in music, and artists in general. So thank You. It means the world to me.&nbsp;I hope you love In The Dusk Of Everything as much as I do.&nbsp;And It's Such A Drag&nbsp;is an excellent introduction to the vibe of the new album. When you download it, take a deep breath, relax and enjoy it.&nbsp;

            Stay tuned. More news coming soon!

            Best,

Lyrics to She's a Sparrow from In The Dusk Of Everything...

Hello Everyone,

Slowcoustic has officially premiered She's a Sparrow. You can listen and read about it here:&nbsp;<a target="_new" href="http://slowcoustic.com/2012/09/19/song-premiere-shes-sparrow-matthew-ryan/">http://slowcoustic.com/2012/09/19/song-premiere-shes-sparrow-matthew-ryan/

So far the response has been wonderful and the advocacy and sharing has been huge. So if you love it and feel inclined after listening give it a share to your world. Don't forget that the album will be released on 10/30/12, but there will be lots of news and info leading up to the release, so stay tuned ok?

In the meantime the words to a song are important too, so here they are. Give them a read and go listen...

<b style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); ">She's A Sparrow

i'm leaving here
different then when i came
things can't be
what they were once they've changed

but let's go down to the mercy

let's play all the songs we loved&nbsp;
let's relive all that was beautiful
as if beauty was enough
i can still hear the laughter
over late nights in the flood&nbsp;
of a roar that broke a bright and brilliant heart
is it just too late or can't we even start.. again?

we settled down
time and disappointments took their toll
until we both stopped trying
and the summer turned to snow&nbsp;

now the sky is full of airplanes
no you can't make a wish
but you could throw your arms around me
like you did before all this
i'm sorry that i hurt you
i was lost and turning cruel
but i swear none of that darkness my love
was meant for you

she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
she's a sparrow
and i'm a street
and i'll watch her float away&nbsp;
from me

Get your first listen to a song off of In The Dusk of Everything on 9/19/12

She's A Sparrow, track #8 from In The Dusk of Everything will stream exclusively at Slowcoustic.com on September 19th!
&nbsp;
A couple weeks ago I approached one of my favorite blogs about premiering a song from Dusk. I wanted to give you guys a sense of what to expect from In The Dusk Of Everything, and I also wanted to direct you towards what I felt was some particularly genuine writing about the love of a particular kind of music. There is this growing scene of great Ambient Folk music from around the world, I find it exciting and in many instances over the years that's exactly what I've felt I was offering you when the song felt natural there. The thing I love about Ambient Folk is that it's progressive, rooted in tradition without being over-reverential to the past. It feels timelessly modern and welcomes everything from synths and banjos to steel and feedback, punk, americana, minimalism and poetry. In The Dusk of Everything is a complete waltz through this kind of music, the theme of the album and the songs that arrived just fit perfectly with this aesthetic, ethereally organic and raw minimalism. You'll see.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Anyway, I shared it with Sandy from Slowcoustic on one condition - that he genuinely feel an affection for the record that compels him to want to advocate for it. He's an honest guy, and I knew he wouldn't blow smoke. But also having read his blog a number of times I had a hunch Dusk would be right down his alley so to speak. Luckily I was right.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
On Wednesday, September 19th we're gonna premiere the first song from In The Dusk of Everything. We'll be streaming She's A Sparrow, it's one of my favorites on the new album. Thankfully, when Sandy came back to me with his list of faves from the album, Sparrow was on his list as well. So here we go, soon you'll get your first peek into what this album is about. There's so much great news ahead, I can't wait to share it but I gotta be patient. Like I've already said before, this music isn't for everyone. I'm not apologizing about that, it's just how it is when you create something from your absolute gut. But I really believe that those of you who love it, will really LOVE it. It's a folky mood record. I can't wait for you guys to live with it.
&nbsp;
But in the meantime, checkout SLOWCOUSTIC here:&nbsp;<a target="_new" href="http://slowcoustic.com/fav-music-2012/">http://slowcoustic.com/fav-music-2012/&nbsp;&nbsp;I guarantee you that you'll find something new to love that you haven't heard before.&nbsp;

Don't forget 10/30/12 is the official release date for In The Dusk Of Everything. Pre-orders and more info will be announced in the coming weeks.
&nbsp;
Always &amp; Soon,

The Cover & Track List for the forthcoming album

Here ya go Guys,

I wanted to share this with you before it might've leaked out since the album is starting to make the rounds in some circles. Can't wait for you guys to hear this new one, it's a particularly special collection to me. Like I've said, this album is the final part of a trilogy that began with Dear Lover, then I Recall Standing and now this one. So it kind of goes like this:

Dear Lover,

I recall standing as though nothing could fall in the dusk of everything.&nbsp;

In The Dusk of Everything has an air of closure and romance to it. It's a quiet record, but it's not passive or lazy feeling. It's got a determination about it, an honest resolve. David Ricketts who produced my very first record, May Day, produced this one. I can't tell you how happy I am that we reconnected. We've been friends all through the years, but this is the first time since May Day that we hunkered down like this creatively. Wish I would have taken more pictures or video while we were recording. But the truth is, we were just too busy and engaged with the work. The album comes out on October, 30th 2012. More details on all that as we get closer.

The cover was designed by J. Hulett Jones. The photo was taken and created by yours truly.

A letter to listeners regarding the new album coming in October...

Inspired by some conversations with some friends over the last few days about my forthcoming record I thought it was time to share some more info with you guys. I sat down with the typewriter and sketched it out, but the typos are in full effect and the paper looks like parchment (see the pic as evidence) so just below is nice and clean transcript.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
&nbsp;
&quot;Hey Guys,
&nbsp;
I'll be releasing more details on the upcoming album in the coming weeks. I've shared it with some close friends and fellow artists already. I count myself lucky to have such a diverse, honest and talented gang of friends. Oh and opinionated, they don't talk junk. All of them operate from a place of integrity and excellence in their medium. Some of them you also either know, listen to and/or read. And some of them I hope you'll discover soon.
&nbsp;
At any rate, so far the response has been unanimously beautiful. Some, who I won't mention by name because it could come across exploitive, have said it's one of my best, if not my best album to date. That's pretty heady stuff for me, particularly when you consider how much I've offered you guys since 1997. I of course love it all in some fashion. My creativity and what excites me dictates my direction, nothing else. I'm only pulled forward by the sense that some kind of truth is being told. I only offer you what I absolutely believe in.
&nbsp;
I don't wanna hype you. That's not my intent here or ever. This music is not for everyone. In fact, this album in particular has virtually no &quot;pop&quot; aspirations. The melodies are strong and the words are the best I could commit to, but it's not compressed to hell and the only earthquakes are found in the words. The air and music is spare and minimalist and in my mind feels like if you were watching Wings Of Desire with the volume muted. That may or may not be a great description when discussing music. But honestly, that's all I care about, how does it feel (that's a statement not a question). I guess it's a folky mood record where the words are turned way up so to be heard and felt. It is the final part in a trilogy that started with Dear Lover back in 2010. With this album you can expect a sense of closure, acceptance, quiet perseverance and a true and sometimes dark romance. But a romance nonetheless.
&nbsp;
The album comes out on 10/30/12. It was recorded live to 2 inch tape by Brian Harrison. David Ricketts (who produced my very first record May Day) helped me to produce this one. We did do some overdubs and mixed it in my new home studio outside of Pittsburgh, PA. I made this album with my own money, straight out of my pocket, money that I earned from previous creativity. So I'm gonna need you guys to keep helping me spread the word if you love it. Genuine advocacy is the only kind of advocacy that matters.
&nbsp;
So like I've heard said, every ending should be the beginning of something else. And again, this is the last part from Dear Lover to I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall and now this one (yeah, I'm saving the title. It will be announced soon). My road has been winding and there's been a lot of changes in the last few years. But this is the road I've chosen, and the truth is that I wouldn't have it any other way. I want to challenge you as much as I challenge myself. That may sound self-obsessed or just wrong. I don't know, &nbsp;but I don't control where my work goes, I just follow it. Those who know me understand the tone in my voice when I say these kind of things. It's essentially an idea communicated by a sense of a shared humanity, not an arrogance. So, as objectively as I can be, I'll end here by suggesting that maybe the rockiest roads lead to the most sublime songs.&quot;

Chic Fa La La La: Preferential Freedom Is Not Freedom At All

When it comes to equality rights, freedom is real when it's understood that it's directly tied to the willful presence of grace. The personal lives of others don't affect you, they don't hurt you. They may worry you, they may sadden you, they may even offend the absolutist in you. But when you purposefully work or contribute to those that would oppress, restrict and viciously devalue the lives of others that don't align with yours, you are a freedom denier. You are operating from the opposite of grace and therefore your version of freedom is a preferential hoax. It's not freedom at all.

All that I've said here obviously pertains to the truth in choices and action in and between consenting humans. I'm not defending bestiality or any other absurdity that is offered as some dissonant thread of reasoning that leads to a slippery slope. You are welcome to your voice via your faith, your heart, your intellect and/or your values, secular or religious, I absolutely support your right to that. But to actively belittle and dehumanize those defined by truths that don't align with yours is regressive and contrary to progress towards a more perfect union and human rights at large.

Here Comes The Snow...

Growing up Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde was a constant on the record player. Sunday mornings, laundry days and dusks on the verge of November. I wrote Here Comes The Snow as a lean back from cynicism towards the innocence and idealism of a kid in the comforts of home. And with all respect and awe I used what I hope is a respectful skeleton of Visions Of Johanna as the soundtrack. Hope that makes&nbsp;sense. Give it a listen if you like:&nbsp;

Here Comes The Snow

Ain't it just like the times&nbsp;
To play tricks on your mind&nbsp;
You've seen so much, so soon&nbsp;
You're already blind&nbsp;
And when someone asks you how you're doin'?&nbsp;
Of course you say you're doing fine&nbsp;

Surrounded by wolves&nbsp;
There's a baby in the rain&nbsp;
Down the street there's a sparrow&nbsp;
Circling a drain&nbsp;
While a waitress mouths the words to a song&nbsp;
That lobotomized her pain&nbsp;

Ohhh hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Here comes the snow&nbsp;

The future's always coming&nbsp;
And it moves just like a fist&nbsp;
Time takes the things you love&nbsp;
And puts a ghost upon your lips&nbsp;
When nothing really matters, nothing matters&nbsp;
More than this&nbsp;

Revolutions flicker out&nbsp;
In the wars of all for me&nbsp;
Follow an idea to its root&nbsp;
And you'll eventually reach the sea&nbsp;
Full of rusted parts and corpses&nbsp;
And broken metaphors like these&nbsp;

Ohhh hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Here comes the snow&nbsp;

My eyes are on the wasteland&nbsp;
The boiler room of humankind&nbsp;
There's a toy piano playing&nbsp;
And there's a memory in my mind&nbsp;
Mom's humming in the kitchen&nbsp;
Clothes are drying on the line&nbsp;

Nightfall was upon us now&nbsp;
All the trees were skeletons&nbsp;
Closed my eyes and felt the sun's heat&nbsp;
Disappear from on my skin&nbsp;
And my thought now is could the world ever be&nbsp;
As kind as I thought it was then?&nbsp;

Ohhh hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Hey la ohhh&nbsp;
Here comes the snow

The Glide Magazine Interview

&nbsp;

            Matthew Ryan - Beyond The Obvious
            By Shane Handler
            October 05, 2011
            &nbsp;&nbsp;<a style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(30, 30, 124); " href="http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php?v=20">
            &nbsp;

We should applaud the artist attempting to create something beyond the obvious.&nbsp; Sometimes that audience catches on (Tom Waits, Bjork) or sometimes it falls on deaf ears.&nbsp; Matthew Ryan (not to be confused with the starting QB for the Atlanta Falcons), falls into neither category, but has been releasing some of the most&nbsp;beyond obviousalbums over the past 14 years since breaking from the late 90s alt-country scene.&nbsp; Unfortunately, not enough people have taken notice. However Ryan, like any true troubadour, carries onward with one recording after another.&nbsp;

Ryan&rsquo;s 13th album,&nbsp;I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall&nbsp;(2011) continues to genre define, while evolving with the spare music accompaniment that accompanies Ryan&rsquo;s raw lyrics.&nbsp; Ryan said it best about his lyrical motivations in this interview with&nbsp;Glide&nbsp;- &ldquo;I&rsquo;m just documenting the life and observations of a fairly intelligent human that has a stubborn belief that we&rsquo;re capable of so much more.&rdquo;
You said in an earlier interview with&nbsp;Glide&nbsp;- &ldquo;I keep fighting, and maybe I can contribute a song that can mean something better.&nbsp; And for me, that&rsquo;s always been the motivation, whether you&rsquo;re talking about &lsquo;London Calling,&rsquo; or &lsquo;Born to Run,&rsquo; or &lsquo;Like a Rolling Stone,&rsquo; it&rsquo;s been my dream to write a song that resonated like that.&rdquo;&nbsp; Are there any songs on&nbsp;I Recall Standing&nbsp;that you feel came close to your goal?&nbsp;

Writing a song is like casting a line in a very mysterious lake. I don&rsquo;t lean much on the craft of it. I follow my gut, if it moves me then I feel I&rsquo;ve succeeded, that I have something. So in that light, yes, there are songs on&nbsp;I Recallthat I feel are resonant and honest and throwing useful fists in the air. Releasing songs is yet an even more mysterious cast of a line into an even bigger lake. But ultimately, listeners decide whether what you&rsquo;ve done has a cultural relevance. And that&rsquo;s what I was talking about there. Of course the table has been tipped over now and all the glasses and plates are shattered on the floor. Some peas have rolled under the couch and shards of glass are splintered everywhere. It&rsquo;s harder to connect people in a cohesive fashion these days. But if there&rsquo;s a song on here that I feel leans for the power and the glory of those songs I mentioned in our previous interview, I would say &quot;Hey Kid&quot; is the one. It&rsquo;s the song I would want every American to hear. Actually, every human, every human confronted by and engaged with the deluge of new media and the flood of good and bad that we&rsquo;re living in.
&nbsp;
&nbsp;

I Recall Standing&nbsp;is remarkably your 13th album &ndash; how would you best describe the creative intentions behind this effort in contrast to your past work?&nbsp; What fuels your writing and album themes these days in the era of mp3 clips it seems harder and harder to get people to really &ldquo;listen.&rdquo;&nbsp; Do you write with the audience in mind of the people who still actually listen to an album from beginning to end?
Sometimes I wish I wrote more with the audience in mind. But that&rsquo;s just not something I can let into the process. I&rsquo;ve always felt that if I tapped into something essential about living that people would identify with it as well. That part of the process is informed by feel&hellip;. feel is what pulls me along. To me, feel is everything. It seems generally true that&rsquo;s it&rsquo;s harder to get people to really listen (or read) these days. They&rsquo;re pulled in so many directions and tend to lean on instant judgement where brevity is king and nuance is lost. I worry that most people don&rsquo;t even realize that they&rsquo;re dealing in that. The flood has become normal. Real consideration and digestion of information, music, policies and propaganda are fundamental to a rich culture and effective democracy. I feel a reaction to the speed of things is coming. I just hope it comes sooner than later. It could be a peaceful revolution and lead to a renaissance of sorts. That would be a beautiful twist because the villainization of intelligence and reason is troubling to say the least. As far as contrasting my work from the beginning to now what is the middle, well, I just feel I&rsquo;m documenting the life and observations of a fairly intelligent human that has a stubborn belief that we&rsquo;re capable of so much more.
&nbsp;
You focus on individual characters stems from a lot of your experiences with non-fictional/current events &ndash; are there any events or occurrences in particular that particularly struck a chord with you?
On&nbsp;I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall&nbsp;I was thinking a lot about the silent majority, the middle and working classes. These people are the spine, the gut, the soul of our country. They send their kids off to fight our wars, they teach our children, they make our meals, they fix our cars, they do all the hard work. Yet their voices are quieted by the minutia of their lives. These people don&rsquo;t often have the luxury of endless hours to read the news from every angle, or fully discern the contract for the mortgage they just signed. They don&rsquo;t have the means to influence legislation. They often operate on trust and faith and optimism for the future. They try to trust that the government and corporations have their best interests in mind. I don&rsquo;t mean to paint these people as helpless targets, because they&rsquo;re not. They&rsquo;re busy, they&rsquo;re working hard. And it feels like the roof is caving in, and there are wars and economic uncertainty. There are flash floods, terror threats and foreclosures. And people are feeling took and there&rsquo;s a lot of fear going around. And all anyone wants is peace, love and security. So I tried to write about it. I did the best I could because those things we want are still possible. They&rsquo;re right there within our reach, but to me, it means we have to raise our voices and we have to engage ideology and capitalism in a conversation about morality. This is idealistic stuff, I know that. And when I say morality, i don&rsquo;t mean in religious terms. I&rsquo;m talking ethics. The difference between right and wrong. A sustainable future, loyalty to workers, shared sacrifice and shared rewards. It&rsquo;s all possible once we cut past the crap and get to the work of constructing a real future that has got to be clearly understood by now is firmly depended on collaboration and shared interests. The alternative of exacting a new social darwinism is more expensive, in so many ways, believe me.
&nbsp;
You&rsquo;ve always questioned what is real, frankly asking - what do we want&rdquo;&nbsp; - do you feel you&rsquo;ve come closer to answering that question and if so how?
All I know is that I&rsquo;m happiest when the world I&rsquo;m wanting for intersects with the world that is. Even if it&rsquo;s only for a second, that&rsquo;s real joy. Whether it&rsquo;s a public or private event, the glow is the same. There&rsquo;s a lot of cons and fakery in our culture. I try to avoid fake power and fake joy. I&rsquo;m always looking for the real thing. Maybe it sounds arrogant, but I don&rsquo;t intend it that way, nor do I feel I have all the answers. Maybe I&rsquo;m looking for something that may never be found in a permanent fashion. But I know that men and women have never been so confronted with themselves via media like they have been in the last 70 years. Commercialization of virtually every aspects of our lives has lead to a new emptiness, a need to fill something that is ultimately meaningless. We should embrace our modernity, there&rsquo;s beauty in it. But there are also dangers.

I Recall&nbsp;is very ambient with its drum loops and DIY feel and holds the album together naturally from the listener&rsquo;s standpoint.&nbsp; Was it a natural decision to go into this minimalist direction?&nbsp; What ideas were you considering with musically on this recording?
When I&rsquo;m being creative my instincts are the pilot. These things are not plotted or designed. I often feel like I&rsquo;m carving a path through a dark thicket of trees. The words have to marry to the cinema, and vice versa. To be honest, it&rsquo;s occurred to me that in many ways the albums I make alone are a collection of demos. I would want to stress this to people that listen to my recent albums. What your hearing on these are the absolute birth of an idea. There is very little distance between conception of the songs and what is ultimately released. Many are first vocal and guitar takes, many of the verses they&rsquo;re hearing were captured right as they&rsquo;re written. It&rsquo;s a very naked and visceral approach. But clearly different from the energy of a rock band. Often, the recordings are more conversational, and that works for me. It&rsquo;s more like just you and me in your car, or in your home.
The songs then come to life in a more explosive fashion on the road, in front of an audience and with other musicians. I hope it makes for a wider experience for people. My thinking is that that the duality and elasticity of the songs offer unique experiences. When someone comes to a show, it&rsquo;s a more communal event, as it should be. I just put together a small backing band of friends to take on tour. We&rsquo;re calling them The Red Needles. I can&rsquo;t wait for people to experience this. The songs now go from the intimate anthems of the album to full on anthems live. These guys have inspired me to want to get back in the studio with a band again once support for I Recall Standing is done. There&rsquo;s a lot ahead.
&nbsp;
You&rsquo;ve toured with some talented contemporaries &ndash; amongst them Lucinda Williams, Josh Rouse, Steve Earle, Kasey Chambers. Is there anything in particular that you believe they picked up from you and what do you feel you picked up from them?

Lucinda and Steve remain the biggest influences on my view of how and why we do what we do and how to state our cases with dignity and intelligence, not to mention music. But I&rsquo;ve been very fortunate to have shared the stage with a ton of great artists. I&rsquo;ve learned something from all of them. As far as what they&rsquo;ve learned from me? Or picked up from me? You&rsquo;d have to ask them. I can only hope that they realized I wasn&rsquo;t the terminally grumpy bastard that my music might often suggests.

How was your summer?&nbsp; What recent shows in particular that you saw struck a chord with you?
It&rsquo;s been a ridiculously hot summer here in Tennessee. It&rsquo;s got me thinking it&rsquo;s time for a change. Summer is too long and mean down here. But all and all things are good personally. I saw U2 this summer for the first time in almost 20 years, and I gotta say, those fellas inspire me. It was a great show, lots of heart and intelligence and utterly connected to the times we&rsquo;re living in without giving in to defeat or despair. Each of us has to make that choice going forward, and great rock n roll still confides in you with a voice that says, &rdquo;I know it&rsquo;s fucked up right now, but don&rsquo;t you dare fucking give up on yourself or us.&rdquo;

Can we expect a tour for the new album and if so &ndash; what do you plan on offering on this run for songs and musicians?
Absolutely. I can&rsquo;t wait to share these songs and The Red Needles with everyone. We&rsquo;re working on the dates now and they should be announced in the coming weeks. We&rsquo;ll be pulling mainly from the last 3 albums but there will be a handful from the earlier collections as well and maybe a cover or two. We&rsquo;re having a great time with this, I suspect that will spread to those in the rooms we play as well. This is sounding really beautiful.

Matthew Ryan will be taking part in the tribute to The Replacements at Bowery Electric in NYC on November 16 &amp; 17th along with a number of guests including Brian Fallon (Gaslight Anthem), Jesse Malin, Ted Leo, Chuck Ragan, Tommy Ramone and Alejandro Escovedo. &nbsp;

You said in an earlier interview with Glide - “I keep fighting, and maybe I can contribute a song that can mean something better. And for me, that’s always been the motivation, whether you’re talking about ‘London Calling,’ or ‘Born to Run,’ or ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ it’s been my dream to write a song that resonated like that.” Are there any songs on I Recall Standing that you feel came close to your goal?

Writing a song is like casting a line in a very mysterious lake. I don’t lean much on the craft of it. I follow my gut, if it moves me then I feel I’ve succeeded, that I have something. So in that light, yes, there are songs on I Recallthat I feel are resonant and honest and throwing useful fists in the air. Releasing songs is yet an even more mysterious cast of a line into an even bigger lake. But ultimately, listeners decide whether what you’ve done has a cultural relevance. And that’s what I was talking about there. Of course the table has been tipped over now and all the glasses and plates are shattered on the floor. Some peas have rolled under the couch and shards of glass are splintered everywhere. It’s harder to connect people in a cohesive fashion these days. But if there’s a song on here that I feel leans for the power and the glory of those songs I mentioned in our previous interview, I would say "Hey Kid" is the one. It’s the song I would want every American to hear. Actually, every human, every human confronted by and engaged with the deluge of new media and the flood of good and bad that we’re living in.

I Recall Standing is remarkably your 13th album – how would you best describe the creative intentions behind this effort in contrast to your past work? What fuels your writing and album themes these days in the era of mp3 clips it seems harder and harder to get people to really “listen.” Do you write with the audience in mind of the people who still actually listen to an album from beginning to end?

Sometimes I wish I wrote more with the audience in mind. But that’s just not something I can let into the process. I’ve always felt that if I tapped into something essential about living that people would identify with it as well. That part of the process is informed by feel…. feel is what pulls me along. To me, feel is everything. It seems generally true that’s it’s harder to get people to really listen (or read) these days. They’re pulled in so many directions and tend to lean on instant judgement where brevity is king and nuance is lost. I worry that most people don’t even realize that they’re dealing in that. As far as contrasting my work from the beginning to now what is the middle, well, I just feel I’m documenting the life and observations of a fairly intelligent human that has a stubborn belief that we’re capable of so much more.

You focus on individual characters stems from a lot of your experiences with non-fictional/current events – are there any events or occurrences in particular that particularly struck a chord with you?

On I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall I was thinking a lot about the silent majority, the middle and working classes. These people are the spine, the gut, the soul of our country. They send their kids off to fight our wars, they teach our children, they make our meals, they fix our cars, they do all the hard work. Yet their voices are quieted by the minutia of their lives. These people don’t often have the luxury of endless hours to read the news from every angle, or fully discern the contract for the mortgage they just signed. They don’t have the means to influence legislation. They often operate on trust and faith and optimism for the future. They try to trust that the government and corporations have their best interests in mind. I don’t mean to paint these people as helpless targets, because they’re not. They’re busy, they’re working hard. And it feels like the roof is caving in, and there are wars and economic uncertainty. There are flash floods, terror threats and foreclosures. And people are feeling took and there’s a lot of fear going around. And all anyone wants is peace, love and security. So I tried to write about it. I did the best I could because those things we want are still possible. They’re right there within our reach, but to me, it means we have to raise our voices and we have to engage ideology and capitalism in a conversation about morality. This is idealistic stuff, I know that. And when I say morality, i don’t mean in religious terms. I’m talking ethics. The difference between right and wrong. A sustainable future, loyalty to workers, shared sacrifice and shared rewards. It’s all possible once we cut past the crap and get to the work of constructing a real future that has got to be clearly understood by now is firmly depended on collaboration and shared interests. The alternative of exacting a new social darwinism is more expensive, in so many ways, believe me.
It was the summer we were living in Paris. The early evening was sunny and warm, and I had a business dinner a mile down the Seine, so I walked. For company, I had my iPod. I plugged in my&nbsp;<a style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(88, 173, 224); font-weight: 600; text-decoration: none; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; " href="http://www.headbutler.com/products/gifts-and-gadgets/shure-e2c-sound-isolating-earphones">professional-grade headphones, dialed up Matthew Ryan's most recent CD, &ldquo;Regret Over the Wires,&rdquo; and started walking.&nbsp;

And, linking them, was beauty: Matthew Ryan's music, which was wise about the struggle for happiness and wiser still about tunes and lyrics you just can't shake.
&nbsp;
Musicians value Matthew Ryan.
&nbsp;
You&nbsp;probably have never heard of him.

Drunk and happy aliens... The Spinning Room

It's gotten to the point where walking into certain bars is like stepping onto an alternate thread in the string theory. Years into my pursuit of real engagement with the arts has admittedly made it harder for me to enjoy entertainment for entertainment's sake. I'm not a fan of The Hangover movies. And I just don't get Lady Gaga, and MIA using Straight To Hell as a bed for her boastful antics felt like a personal affront to nearly all that I hold dear. Ahhh the years reveal (or provoke) a curmudgeon at times. Cormac McCarthy may be right, maybe it is&nbsp;No Country For Old Men. But I'm not old, not yet anyway. But culture moves so quick these days. We're living in dog years. So truth be told, I'm almost 300 years old.&nbsp;

&nbsp;
At any rate, every once in awhile I find myself stepping into a room where it's debatable who the aliens are. Everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. And voices and music and laughter are loud. Lights flash and pulse and the mood is that of a beehive. Me, I'm overwhelmed feeling a bit out of place looking for Eva Marie Saint reading Wallace Stevens in the corner. And I'm confronted again with a sinking notion, I should have stayed home. It's not that I'm above or below adventure, I guess I've just gotten more reserved over time. I prefer a quiet room with good friends and Sinatra while we gripe about politics or definitions of words rarely used in a sentence.
&nbsp;
But then there's tequila. A completely different monster really. My appreciation for it started with a Leonard Cohen recipe that was introduced to me in Toronto a few years ago. A fruity looking drink called The Red Needle, essentially tequila and cranberry with Lime Roses (safest at a bar). Now, by no means do I condone over indulgences in virtually anything other than breathing, but tequila is a magical drink. On more than a handful of occasions The Red Needle moved my thoughts pleasantly to a less critical or discerning part of my brain. It brings an ease, a peace, a willingness to skydive so to speak. Now understand, I've been at this for years, so I know my limits as a drinker. I believe the reputation of tequila is well-founded, it can cross a line. But as long as you walk it responsibly along the edges it makes events like dance clubs more like wonderlands. I don't know quite what it does, what chemical reaction it creates. Maybe it alleviates certain insecurities or disassociates me from my ego or social preconceptions. At any rate, it's ability to awaken me to the bold and vapid escapism of Kesha's&nbsp;Tic Tock&nbsp;speaks volumes alone. But more than that, it's given me access or an openness to engage with people I wouldn't generally meet or converse with. It's a sad truth that as we get older, we tend to operate more and more within what we know rather than venture outside of our perceived borders. It's a real shame and something we should lean more and more out of. With or without tequila. But that's what The Spinning Room is about. More or less.
&nbsp;
You can hear it by clicking the link below. The long intro is by design, it's intended to disorient a listener that may have expectations of what one of my songs may sound or feel like. Not unlike how I feel when I walk into a dance club playing pop music. But once the story starts around minute 2, I hope it starts making sense and offers a grin. And more than that, I hope it encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone from time to time.
